Spencer Rollins in ICU

This is my wife’s brother’s nephew, and part of our church family from Napa.

Kenneth Fine from the Goldsboro News-Argus wrote a news article on him two days ago.

Spencer's battle
DURHAM — Somewhere inside the Duke Hospital Intensive Care Unit, Spencer Rollins is fighting — his parents lost in prayer at his bedside.
But the young family is not supposed to be there.
Doctors were preparing the 2-year-old’s discharge a few weeks ago, but something went wrong after Spencer’s surgery.
So instead of learning the alphabet with his mother, Katie, he is fighting off an infection in his lungs.
Instead of making his father, Andy, laugh, he relies on a ventilator to breathe.
The tube down his throat makes it impossible for him to flash the smile his parents say lights up a room.
He can’t tell them he loves them, or demonstrate to the medical staff just how polite he is growing up to be.
A few months ago, you would have never known Spencer was sick — that he had been in and out of hospitals since he was 3 days old.
Or that his parents once thought he might die shortly after his birth, that he has endured five open-heart surgeries.
This one was supposed to be the last.

American Idol Last Night

So our DVR didn’t record all of American Idol last night on “Idol Gives Back,” but when I was reading through my RSS feeds this morning Josh Harris made a blog post about the contestants singing Shout to the Lord as the final song. I found it absolutely fascinating that they would pick a Christian praise song to sing. I hate to be skeptical but I’m betting it was a tactical move by the network “rather than” done out of love for Jesus.

My Visit With Aleksei

Well, I went to visit my nephew at Stanford Hospital today, and had a wonderful time. For those of you who don’t know Aleksei had to have emergency surgery last Wednesday due to a perforation in his colon. They removed 5 inches of his colon and put in a temporary colostomy bag. The doctor told my sister that he was the sickest person in the hospital last Wednesday, and that he could have died in the four hour surgery.

While I was there, he was in pretty good spirits. He ate some jello, a sherbet kind of dessert, a popsicle, and more jello. He told me all about how gross his ostomy bag is, and was very brave when they had to take some of his blood (I told him that he was braver than you dad).

I prayed with him when I left and he asked me to bring Liam to see him. I told him I would, and am trying to figure out how to bring Liam back tomorrow.
